DIY beauty products are becoming very popular these days and it’s easy to see why.
For example my mother, aunts and other long-term beauty product addicts i know are all expressing increased skin sensitivity and drier hair after years of using different, increasingly elaborate lotions and creams.
Some natural beauty products you can buy are wonders: creating miraculous improvements on skin and hair. But with Greenwashing rife, are the products you are buying really what they say they are when they claim to be natural and organic?
Much of the time simpler is better along with good quality sleep, nutritious food and fresh air.
For an experiment, how about testing out a mix of olive oil and sugar in place of your usual body exfoliator and see if there’s a difference? Let us know how you get on in the comments below.
Our hair and skin can eventually revolt against chemicals
Microbeads, a common exfoliator and also found in toothpaste have been in the Health News a lot lately and subject to criticism for some time, and recently there has been some movement towards banning them completely.
These tiny plastic particles are an environmental hazard as they do not degrade but instead go down our drains and into the oceans. So always try and use toothpaste that is microbead free.
Not only that, this plastic is full of chemicals and is swallowed by fish, birds and other animals. Find out more at Greenpeace.
According to the EPA, ‘out of the 10,500 chemical ingredients used in personal care products, just a miserly 11% have been assessed for health and safety’.
Hair products, especially hair dyes, commonly contain many chemicals such as lead and formaldehyde that can be toxic if our bodies are overexposed to them. Detailed information about these chemicals can be found on the EPA website.
Aside from removing artificiality from your beauty routine, making your own homemade beauty products is just plain and simple FUN!
If you want to take it further, you can even customise the glass bottles to keep your creations in by decorating your own labels or buying pretty custom sticky labels on somewhere like Etsy.
With all recipes it is best to test with a little first, to check your skin and hair do not react badly to the ingredients.
NOTE: Certain ingredients like vinegar or essential oils like tea tree should only be used when diluted because of their strength.
Here are some recipes to get you started. These recipes are enough for 1-2 uses, depending on how large an area you are covering.
Once you have tried them out for yourself, you can adapt measurements to your liking.
We sell a lot of the ingredients for the DIY Beauty Recipes covered below in our Natural and Organic Marketplace so make sure you take a quick browse for some amazing deals!
We did not include yoghurts, lemon, sugar, mayo or cornstarch in the pre populated cart as we thought these would be better bought fresh from your local supermarket.

1. Hair oil recipe:
This hair oil will make your hair smell amazing, but if it isn’t to your taste, you can play around with different combinations of essential oils.
You have probably heard the hype around coconut oil in the last year, and if you haven’t tried it out for yourself, there are many reasons to do so.
It is a great moisturiser for chapped lips and hair, and I like to use it in flapjacks too: replacing the butter with coconut oil and sugar for mashed banana and chopped dates.
2. Honey olive lip balm:
Honey and olive oil is a quick lip balm, which can be made from ingredients you probably can find round the house; try mixing a teaspoon of each. The only problem with this one is that it is tempting to lick it straight off your lips once you’ve put it on!
3. Apple Cider Vinegar Toner recipe:
The fragrance of lavender is incredibly relaxing and can help you get to sleep and apple cider vinegar has antibacterial effects.
4. Exhilarating Shower Bomb
Quite simply, makes you’re shower smell amazing! For this unique idea by Sarah Lipoff from Pop Sugar you’ll need…
5. Spot cream:
Another easy recipe and one of our fave DIY Beauty Products is a mix of coconut oil and tea tree essential oil, again mix a teaspoon of each and apply.
6. Rosewater moisturiser:
Add Rose Water to olive oil or coconut oil for a simple and effective moisturiser.
Rose Water can also be used alone as a toner and acts as a natural perfume. If you want to try making your own rosewater: soak rose petals in a small amount of hot water for 30-40 minutes and then filter out the petals.
7. Spot steam:
Add a teaspoon each of Tea tree essential oil and fresh lemon juice to a basin of boiling water and hold your face above it (not in it) with a towel over the back of your head to keep the steam in.
8. Yogurt face mask:
Yogurt soothes the stomach, and the face! Yogurt has lactic acid to smooth skin and anti-bacterial properties which can help repair acne. Add honey and a few drops of tea tree oil to add extra spot healing effects.
Why not add some fresh strawberries to the mix to create a wonderful Strawberry face mask?
9. Avocado face and hair mask:
Mix the above 3 ingredients until you have a nice even consistency and then apply to face softly rubbing it in and leave for 30 minutes.
For the Hair mask apply to scalp and hair, brush through and leave for 30 minutes. Wrap in a warm damp towel and repeat every two to three weeks.
After a while you should really start to see a big improvement in the natural condition of your hair and skin.
10. Coconut and Rose Body Scrub
This fantastic recipe comes courtesy of The Beauty Department and the end result is a excellent body scrub with an incredible smell! You’ll need…
11. Hair serum:
Warm the coconut oil slightly if necessary to help to mix it with the castor oil. Then you can keep the mixture in the fridge or a cool place.
